‘Meet Your Tall Sisters’ Danielle van Grondelle

This week we are meeting one of our tall sisters that I have known for a long time! It is interesting how the universe reconnected Danielle and I over 2 years ago.
We attended the same high school back home in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Now fast-forward a few years and I am browsing on Facebook one faithful day while I was getting ready to move back to New York from Los Angeles. Long behold I saw that Danielle was also living in NYC. It did not take long before we were catching up over brunch and she is now a close friend and neighbor:).

It is truly admirable what Danielle has achieved in the past years. Learn more about her story. Lets meet our Tall Sister!

What is your full name?

Danielle van Grondelle

How tall are you?

I am 5’11, 1m80

Have you ever struggled accepting your height? Please share your journey.

No I have always seen my height as a positive attribute. In the Netherlands where I grew up there are a lot of tall people so maybe that also had something to do with it. In my family however I am the only tall woman and I embrace that.
My height had made my career as a model possible, so I am thankful to be tall.

What is your current occupation and how has your height influenced your career?

I am a fulltime international plus model. Being tall is a necessity for modeling so being the right height has very much helped me progress rapidly in my career. It is truly a blessing.

You were part of history last year as one of the first Plus Size models to walk in New York Fashion Week; can you tell us more about that experience?

It was amazing and unforgettable. I was so incredibly proud to be a part of it.
Showing diversity on such an iconic world stage like New York Fashion Week was very empowering.
We showed the world that you do not have to be skinny to be beautiful. Every woman should embrace her healthy size whatever that may be. Starving yourself to be something you are not is never beautiful. I wish for a future in which there is even more diversity and celebration of self.

Please give us a glimpse of what life is like as an international Plus Model; Please describe a day in the life of Danielle.

I am constantly on the go, flying all over the world. When I work on location the call time is often very early because they want to start shooting at sunrise. So we start at around 5am with hair and makeup, then we start shooting until about 6pm.

If I have a day off in NYC we go to several castings to see clients with our ‘book’ and card, that lists everything from body measurements to past experineces. So as models we have to be ready to work every day.

Overall it is a lot of flying around the world, running around NYC for casting; at the same time it is so amazing to create something beautiful with the talented creative people I get to work with on set.

What is a unique quality or interest that you have, that no one would guess?

I am a total hip-hop head. I love rapping old school hip-hop songs. I also love designing clothes and making jewelry. When you see me walking around town in my crazy printed outfits, I am sure you can kind of guess that I am a creative who is obsessed with fashion.

I created my blog  www.daniellevangrondelle.com where I can showcase all of my creative ventures.

Who or what inspires you?

Unique individuals who follow their own path and inspire everyone around them inspire me. For me Iris Apfel is someone like that. We both share an absolute love for prints and designing. Her daring and eccentric style at her age is just something so amazing.
I think I will keep my daring style forever and she shows me that this is something to be proud of at any age.

Do you have any words of advice for our younger Tall Sisters?

Don’t be your own worst critic; women can be so hard on themselves. Please wear that bikini! You don’t want to look back at your photos and say oh I looked so good looking back. Why didn’t I wear that bikini at the beach? We should celebrate our style at any size. Surround yourself with great people. If you have good energy around you then you will flourish. A good support system is so important! I am thankful every day for all the great people around me.
