It is Sunday and I have some very exciting news!

A new Tall Retailer has joined our Tall Family and I am delighted to introduce them to you. Lets welcome Tall Order! Our lovely Tall Sister Alison, founded Tall Order. This new label is offering contemporary, stylish, good quality clothing for taller women, all designed and manufactured in the UK using quality fabrics.

“Being tall means you are part of a scattered but very supportive community of people. Alison Lavenant, Owner of Tall Order”

Alison is spot on! Our community of Tall Woman is sacred to me and here at The Tall Society we are ready to support all of our Tall Sisters. Lets start with learning more about our Alison.

Oh and make sure you make it to the end of the interview for an exclusive discount. Yep I like my discounts:)

What is your full name?

Alison Lavenant

How tall are you?

A lovely 6 ft 2”, UK size 12

What is your current occupation and tell us about your professional journey leading up till now.

I split my time between working full-time on Tall Order, and looking after my very tall little boy called Thomas who is 4 and a half and just started school. Previous to this I worked at the BBC for a long time – on both sides of the Atlantic – working in a number of roles.  From press and PR to being part of the programming team for US cable channel BBC America and lastly programming acquisition for the commercial part of the BBC looking at scripted drama, comedy, children’s and entertainment formats.

Has your height influenced your career? Please share how.

I don’t think being tall influenced my choice of career to begin with, but having difficulty in buying clothes was obviously the driving force behind Tall Order.

When I was young, I was this tall skinny shy girl with no confidence at all.  With age you come to realize how fabulous being tall is and what an advantage it is; and also what a massive confidence boost you can have by wearing lovely clothes that fit well.

So one day I decided there would be no more pulling down hems or sleeves to get an extra couple of inches before they creep back to their original size or feeling uncomfortable in important meetings because your skirt or dress length has shown far more than your colleagues or clients wanted to see! Also, to be able to throw something on that not only looks great but feels comfortable and is flattering to a taller figure without having to double-check 10 times in the mirror that the length of the dress or the sleeve doesn’t look too bad was a massive factor too.

Please share the origin story of Tall Order Clothing

I had the idea 15 years ago. At that point it was very very difficult to get clothes for tall women. There was one shop and that was it – no other choice.  I registered the company name back in January 2000.  But between a busy, stressful career at the BBC, having a child, plus never having the time or the money to do it, it was one of things that I always said I was going to do but never managed to get round to it. So when I left the BBC a few years ago I realized now was the time to do it and here we are.

What do want our Tall Sisters to know about Tall Order Clothing?

Apart from wanting them to know the site exists, I want them to know that this is just the beginning for Tall Order. We are a small company just starting out and hoping to grow. We are open to ideas, suggestions, and constructive criticism – so please send us your comments HERE.  We’re not a big corporation trying to make money with poor quality clothing. We have a strong ethical position as well. All our clothes are made in the UK from good quality fabrics. This is not fast throwaway fashion. Our passion comes from not only offering lovely clothes but giving tall women more choices, and that’s got to be a good thing.

Please give us a glimpse of the design process, how did you arrive at some of the pieces that you have launched with?

I work with a very lovely freelance designer called Jenny who came up a capsule collection for AW15. The inspiration for this initial launch came from when I was working and the struggle I had finding the kind of clothes I wanted to wear – especially dresses and jackets.  We wanted to pull together a versatile collection of easy to wear pieces that could work on their own or be easily incorporated into someone’s existing wardrobe that could be dressed up and down. I’m a big fan of clothing being simple and elegant and I think we’ve achieved that.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Everywhere!  I love walking around – especially in big cities such as London and Paris – and seeing the creativity of women and the looks they’ve put together.  There is nothing more beautiful and transfixing than a stylish woman – especially a tall woman – and that combination can stop people in their tracks.

What has been your favorite design to date and why?

I have three designs that I particularly love.  The Bob collarless jacket because of its versatility.  It looks great with jeans or smarter trousers, as soon as we saw the fabric we knew it would make a great jacket. The Amya oversized coat in grey because it goes with everything and it’s such a treat to have all that length on a winter coat!  And the Amy jersey dropped shoulder dress because it’s super easy to wear and super comfortable.

What can we expect to see in the future from Tall Order Clothing?

Lots of lovely clothes hopefully!  We’re currently working on SS16, which will be more of a mix of casual pieces.  As we grow so will our ability to offer a wider range of clothing, so please spread the word.

Is there anything else you would like to share with your Tall sisters?

Being tall means you are part of a scattered but very supportive community of people.  If you don’t have tall friends, join an online group or follow a blog.  There is nothing more empowering and heartening than hearing from other “Tall Sisters” who are having the same issues or funny stories. Literally stand tall, put your shoulders back, hold you head up high and feel proud.  We stand out from the crowd because we are outstanding.  The majority of people would love to be taller so embrace it. Add some lovely clothes which fit well into the mix and you will feel invincible.

Wow I am just amazed with how many beautiful and inspiring Tall Sisters we have. This honestly is so much fun for me to do! Well as promised Alison was very generous to allow a super special discount code for The Tall Society readers.

Use code TTS25 for an exclusive 25% discount on ALL items over at TALL Order valid until October 31st.

So if you are looking around for your fall and winter coat, or some work appropriate attire I would definitely have a look at the current Tall Order AW15 collection!

Looking forward to next week!
