‘Meet Your Tall Sisters’ Nadine Moffatt

Ladies what is better then coming across a retailer that caters to us woman of height? It is exhilarating, it makes you want to bust a move, you tell everyone that will listen and then take a little victory lap right back to your computer so you can learn more about your latest find.

This is the impact Dress Mavens had on me. In their own words, “Dress Mavens was founded to help women feel comfortable in their own skin so they can forget size, and focus on fit.”

On Dressmavens.com you can design your very own custom dress that will be ‘made to measure’ within 3-4 weeks. Throw in free shipping to Canada and the USA and there should be nothing stopping you to try their services. Now before you go off shopping, lets get to know the co-founder of Dress Mavens and our Tall Sister Nadine.

What is your full name?

Nadine Moffatt

How tall are you?

I am 5’11”

What is your current occupation and tell us about your professional journey leading up till now.

I am co-founder and owner of Dress Mavens, an online custom dress store. After working in the beauty, fashion and wellness industry for over a decade, I had my twins and didn’t return from maternity leave. With the desire for a flexible schedule I started a personal styling business, which then led to realizing the demand for stylish, professional custom clothing amongst my clients.

Has your height influenced your career? Please share how.

Well, aside from my height detouring me from a career as a professional ballerina by the age of 12. As I’ve gotten older I’ve really realized there is a need for custom clothing for tall women. I’ve always loved to wear dresses and my hemline and waist placement were always off.

Please share the origin story of Dress Mavens

Long-time friends, Nadine Moffatt and Paulina Zimakas have always had a love affair with fashion. They live, work, and breathe design – both have worked with clients helping them find their own personal style whether in clothing or interior design. With a passion for design and well-tailored pieces, Nadine and Paulina did have one vice; the constant need for custom dresses. They came to the realization that this wasn’t a vice, rather a necessity as ‘off-the-rack’ shopping became impossible and visits to their tailors were a regular occurrence. Nadine and Paulina knew that they could exchange many dreaded change room tales with other women. So, they packed their bags and headed to Vietnam to find their tailor. They are proud of their strong global partnership based in Hoi An, which provides hand-made, award-winning craftsmanship while benefiting the local community. Their expert tailors practice corporate social responsibility while maintaining high ethical principles, and comply with the ISO 9001:2008 standards. A portion of Dress Mavens’ sales are donated to Quang Nam Orphans and Handicapped Children Center. Dress Mavens was founded to help women feel comfortable in their own skin so they can forget size, and focus on fit. Along the way they found something they didn’t even know existed. A group of women searching for body acceptance. Nadine and Paulina have joined this global movement by helping women love their bodies and be fashionable at the same time!

What do want our Tall Sisters to know about Dress Mavens?

There are alternatives out there for tall women – you don’t have to settle for poor fit.

Please give us a glimpse of the design process, how did you arrive at some of the pieces that you offer today?

We consider all body shapes when designing our collection. We try to create flattering silhouettes that offer well-placed seams and ruching. Our dresses are made with luxurious fabric that provides a beautiful stretch, because we feel comfort is valued as much as style.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Our style ethos is classic and timeless. We look to designs that will be basic wardrobe staples that provide versatility, and can transition from desk to dinner.

What has been your favorite design to date and why?

I think it’s a tie between the Charlie and the Emily. The Charlie has been in our collection almost since the beginning, and I honestly feel like I’m in my pajamas when I wear it. I love the ruching across my middle and the empire waist seam. The Emily is so versatile, and I personally love the fuller skirt and pockets. I run around in it with my flats, and then wear it out for date night with heels. Do I really have to pick one? 😉

What can we expect to see in the future from Dress Mavens?

New designs to our collection for 2016, and our colour palette will grow while we continue to offer the classics. Our clients are asking for more pockets and sleeves, so you’ll see that reflected for sure!

Is there anything else you would like to share with your Tall Sisters?

Being tall can sometimes mean wearing a larger size, just because you’re frame is bigger – whether you’re thick, thin, or curvy. We encourage women to forget about the size, and focus on the fit. Let’s embrace our beautiful bodies and #dropthesize.

Thank you Nadine for sharing your story!

We’ll again chat next week.
