‘Meet Your Tall Sisters’ Lisa Mamers

Another Sunday and another edition of ‘Meet Your Tall Sisters’ this week we are shinning a spotlight on the beautiful Lisa. Lisa works for one of my all time favorite Tall retailers, Long Tall Sally as a Buyer. In her capacity of Buyer, she has a lot to do with the stylish tall garments we see sold in North America. Being a consumer of their clothes, I think Lisa is doing an amazing job!

Standing tall and proud at 6’2, she relates 100% to what it truly means to be a woman of height. Lisa is currently touring around partaking in the LTS Pop-up shops, so you might have an opportunity to meet here there! Check out the link for the upcoming locations they are visiting.

Lets meet our our Tall Sister.

What is your full name?

Lisa Mamers

How tall are you?

6’2”, size 14 dress, size 12 shoe.

Please tell us what your current occupation is and your journey leading up to it.

I am the Assistant Buyer for Long Tall Sally, North America. I have worked in the fashion industry for over 10 years, wearing many different hats: visual merchandising, store management and sales, product development and buying. I have worked for a high end luxury retailer, an off- price discount retailer, and everything in between- but always with the end goal of working in women’s tall fashion!

I joined LTS in 2013 as the Store Manager for our downtown Toronto store. Joining the downtown team was one of the best decisions I have made in my career! I worked with an incredible and inspiring group of women and gained ground floor experience and understanding of what our customer wants/ needs, before moving into the buying role in our North American Head Office.

Has your height influenced your career? Please share how.

Absolutely it has! I always loved clothing and fashion, but growing up tall made it more difficult to shop and try out trends. There was not a lot of tall clothing on the market in the 80’s-90’s. As a teenager, shopping often ended in frustration and tears… But then my Mom taught me to sew and it changed everything!

I started to create my own looks and adapt current trends to fit my body type. This desire to have the same access to fashion as my average height peers is what really drove me to pursue a career in the industry. My drive to provide fashion for myself and my fellow tall ‘sisters’ intensified as I moved through my career and worked with retailers that sold beautiful clothing and shoes that I just simply couldn’t fit into.

It is a dream come true to work with fashion that I know will fit me perfectly!

What are some of the most memorable experiences you had while working for LTS?

Travelling through the USA and working at our Pop Up Shops is definitely one of my most memorable experiences so far with LTS. The energy and excitement at the shops is unmatched to anything I have come across in all my years working in the industry. We visit cities that don’t have access to our stores and the customers are always so thrilled to be able to see the collection in person and try things on. There is something really special about being in a room full of women who understand the challenges and benefits (because there are definitely benefits!) of being a taller than average woman. Throw in some gorgeous fashions and it is a recipe for a fantastic, crazy, inspiring weekend of tall!

In fact, the Fall/Winter Pop Ups kicked off last weekend! Check out our Facebook page or Website for a city near you. Bree, we will be in NYC Oct 23-24!

Please give us a glimpse of the buying process, how do you decide on some of the pieces that are sold today?

The majority of the range is designed and produced by our uber talented UK Buying/Design team. Here in North America we supplement the main LTS range with styles that are distinctive for the North American market; such as weather specific items like coats and boots. The UK simply does not have the same kind of winters as we do (especially here in Canada!) so it is important that we source out styles that meet this need.

One of the biggest categories that we buy in North America is our branded footwear. We have a growing list of quality and fashionable brands to offer our Canadian and US customers. We work closely with our UK office to review the LTS shoe collection and choose styles that complement the range.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

From everywhere! The streets of the city, the runways of Fashion Week, pop culture icons and the tall women that I meet out in the world every day! Our range has to appeal to all ages and all style points of view, so I really pay attention to what women around me are actually wearing- and what they aspire to wear.

What are your top 3 favorite LTS pieces of the new arrivals and why?

Fall/Winter is my favorite season! I love to layer the rich and cozy textures of denim, wool, leather, corduroy, etc. And I am OBSESSED with boots!

The Leather Biker Jacket – AMAZING. The fit is perfect and the leather butter soft. This style is a new classic and goes with anything; jeans and a tee or over a dress. It is an investment piece that will carry you from season to season. I feel sexy and tough in this jacket.

The Atlas Over the Knee Boot- this boot is a dream come true! It has not only been designed to fit a larger foot, but the shaft is made extra long. This boot will flatter those legs that go on for days… So cute with a short skirt or leggings and a tunic.

The entire Fall Winter TTYA X Long Tall Sally collection. The vibe is lux 70’s with rich textures and a warm color palette. I cannot wait to get my hands on the printed maxi dress and suede mini dress.

Is there anything else you would like to share with your Tall sisters?

Don’t let your height determine what you do or don’t wear. If you are drawn to a particular style, try it out! You already attract attention when you walk into a room, why not play it up with a jacket in a bright color, a bold printed blouse or sky high heels. Most importantly, look for clothes that FIT YOU PROPERLY.   As tall women, we waste so much time trying to ‘make it work’ and compromising fit. Don’t do it. Shop according to your size. I promise you that shopping is so much more fun when the clothes fit!

Thank you Lisa for being so open and honest with us! I can’t wait to meet you on October 23rd! Everyone Lisa, myself and the fantastic LTS team will be offering styling advise and hanging out at the New York pop-up shop, so please stop by!
