Diversity In Height and Shape

How many of us have gone through a period in our lives where we felt we weren’t pretty enough? Skinny enough? Curvy enough? Personally, as I look through certain magazines and “Instagram models,” I can’t help but think, “Man, I wish I had abs like that!” Or something close to that thought. However, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that we are all shaped differently, especially us tall women.

Being tall already has its perks, from standing out in the crowd to not having to do too much to grab someone’s attention. We get that attention all on our own and by the grace of the universe. Let’s add that onto our already tall frames and the shape we were blessed to have. This is something we should appreciate. Whether you’re curvy, slim, tall, or small,. appreciate what you have, because I guarantee there is someone else out there wishing they looked like you. Of course, for me, there is always something I want to work on, whether it’s not eating as much cake as I’d like or heading to the gym to bust out some squats. However, even though I am conscious about what I put in my body or what workout I’m doing, I don’t like to make it something I dread. It’s more so a lifestyle for me. Working out is fun for me and so is eating that last piece of chocolate cake.

“We want to make sure the collection feels cohesive. But we want to make sure that the models and the women wearing it are just as different as the women that shop in a store,” – Christian Siriano

Fashion designers are also noticing that diversity in the fashion industry is a major plus to not only the models who work for them, but it also helps them to build their brand. Christian Siriano had many plus size models in his Spring 2017 presentation. “We want to make sure the collection feels cohesive. But we want to make sure that the models and the women wearing it are just as different as the women that shop in a store,” Siriano says. Although this celebrity is not in fashion, comedian Aidy Bryant also spoke out about the fashion industry needing to be more inclusive of other body types when finding what to wear for the Emmy’s in 2016. She states that she was really frustrated with the selections of clothing at photo shoots when she first went into the spotlight after joining the cast of Saturday Night Live. For the Emmy’s, Eloquii designed the perfect dress for her that made her feel fabulous, young, and comfortable.

“To me it just feels like a no-brainer that you would want to dress as many people as you could so you could represent your brand. The more that television and film is willing to represent these people; it’s part of the circular nature of fashion and magazines and celebrities that we also have to work together. Either you’re a part of it or you’re not.” – Aidy Bryant

There is no one-stop shop when it comes to how a tall woman looks any more. Maybe about 15 years ago, we would always notice models in the magazines and on television that were very slim.  That is still the case today, however, slowly but surely we are seeing a change in diversity when it comes to body shapes with models. People are starting to realize that diversity in heights in shapes is a beautiful thing. That is what people are attracted to and what they appreciate. Also, wouldn’t it be somewhat boring to see the same thing over and over again? The acceptance of a range of shapes, heights, and sizes is wonderful. We aren’t fully there yet with having a massive range of shapes and sizes in fashion but maybe, just maybe in another 15 years, we will notice top designers putting an array of beautiful women who are all different in their New York and London fashion shows. Until then, accept who YOU are. Be happy with how YOU look because as cliché as it might sound, there’s only one you and absolutely no one can take that away. Appreciate what you were given and continue walking tall.

Last but not least, use that sidewalk as a runway and strut like Naomi Campbell.

Peace and Love My Tall Queens!
